Expert summary
Srebrenica is a small mountain town in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the Republika Srpska. The town was the site of the Srebrenica Massacre during the Bosnian War. During the war Srebrenica was designated as a United Nations “safe area” to provide a safe refuge for its civilian population. During the summer of 1995 the UN and NATO forces failed to protect the “safe area”. The Dutch UN battalion of 400 soldiers were not given air support by NATO and were quickly defeated when they were attacked by the Drina Corps of the Bosnian Serb Army (VRS). Members of the VRS then rounded up the Bosnian Muslim men, stripped them of their belongings, and methodically killed them.
